Your first 30 days in the UAE: resident documents in the right order

A practical sequence for documents, mobile service, insurance and banking after moving to the UAE.

The short answer

During your first month, focus on the sequence managed by your sponsor or employer: confirm lawful entry status → complete medical fitness screening when required → complete biometrics → receive residency issuance and Emirates ID. Then finish insurance, mobile, banking and household setup. Some steps can overlap, and the exact order varies by emirate and residence category.

Before you begin: identify who manages the application

For an employed resident, the employer or its authorized representative usually coordinates much of the process. For family, investor, free-zone or self-sponsored residence, responsibility may sit with the sponsor or applicant. Ask for a written list of steps, fees and required documents. Do not pay an unknown intermediary merely for a promise to “fast-track” a government procedure.

  • Keep color copies of your passport, entry permit, job offer or sponsor document.
  • Check your name, date of birth, nationality and passport number on every application.
  • Confirm whether ICP or the relevant Dubai channel is handling your case.

ICP describes residence issuance as a service linked to an Emirates ID application. Check the official ICP service ↗

Days 1–7: medical fitness and ID preparation

The UAE Government portal says residence applicants aged 18 and over generally need a medical fitness test. Use only an authorized center identified by your employer, sponsor or government service. Testing requirements can vary by occupation and category.

  1. Obtain the application number or appointment confirmation.
  2. Carry the original passport and every document named by the center.
  3. Keep the receipt and result in a secure folder.
  4. Never post medical results or identity numbers on social media.

Days 5–14: biometrics and Emirates ID application

Emirates ID is the mandatory government identity card for UAE residents. A first application may require biometric registration. Follow the deadline shown on your application: ICP states that biometrics must be completed within the specified period to avoid cancellation.

Days 10–21: confirm residence issuance

Do not consider the process finished after the medical test or biometrics alone. Confirm the residence-issuance notification and review the recorded details. ICP states that after residence issuance, the Emirates ID is delivered through an authorized courier. Timing depends on the completeness, category and workload of the application.

If your name, passport number or another detail is wrong, notify the sponsor or authority promptly. An error can later disrupt insurance, banking and other services.

Days 14–24: arrange health insurance

Insurance obligations and processes vary by emirate, visa category and sponsor. Do not choose a policy solely because it has the lowest price. Check the clinic network near home and work, co-payments, medicines, chronic conditions, dental, maternity, pre-approval and emergency treatment.

Keep the digital card, policy number and claims instructions. Contact the insurer through its official application or the number printed on the card—not through a link in an unsolicited message.

Days 18–30: mobile service, UAE PASS and address

Once the necessary identity documents are available, register a number in your own name with a licensed operator. It may receive government and banking alerts, so do not give the SIM to another person. Configure UAE PASS only through the official application and protect your phone with a strong screen lock.

Record your correct residential address and retain your tenancy or other proof-of-address document. A bank, employer, school or utility provider may request it.

Bank account: prepare evidence and compare terms

Requirements differ by bank. A bank will normally verify identity, address, employment or source of funds. UAE Central Bank rules state that identity verification, including address, should use original official documents whenever possible. Additional information may be requested as part of customer due diligence.

  • Compare minimum-balance rules, monthly fees, transfers and ATM access.
  • Submit documents through the bank’s official site, application or branch.
  • Never reveal an OTP, PIN, CVV or application password.
