The short answer

A UAE resident can sponsor a spouse and children when the sponsor has valid residence, proven family relationships, suitable accommodation and qualifying income. The federal threshold for standard family sponsorship is AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus employer-provided housing. Dubai uses GDRFA/Amer; other emirates generally use ICP.

Who can normally be sponsored?

ICP says a foreign resident may sponsor a spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25 and children with special needs. Parents, stepchildren and some residence categories have extra conditions, so do not apply the spouse checklist to every relative.

A dependant's status is linked to the sponsor's residence and cannot extend beyond it. If the sponsor's own permit is close to expiry, check the renewal sequence first.

What documents should you prepare?

Many delays begin before the form: a certificate is not correctly attested, a name differs from the passport, or housing evidence belongs to another person. Compare names, dates and numbers before paying.

  • Passports for the sponsor and family members with sufficient validity.
  • The sponsor's valid residence and Emirates ID.
  • New photographs meeting current specifications.
  • Attested marriage and birth certificates, with Arabic translation where required.
  • A labour contract or salary certificate.
  • A registered tenancy contract or ownership record.
  • Insurance and category-specific evidence where required.

What is the application sequence?

Identify the authority for the emirate and category. Complete the entry or status-change step if the family member is already inside the UAE. Family members over 18 generally complete medical fitness at an authorized centre. The linked Emirates ID application, biometrics where required and residence issuance follow.

ICP states that the procedure must be completed within 60 days of entry in applicable cases. Save the application, receipts and tracking reference; report a name or passport error immediately.

How much does it cost, and what causes delays?

There is no reliable single total. Cost depends on emirate, duration, whether the applicant is inside the UAE, medical screening, ID, insurance, delivery, translation and attestation. Ask for an itemized breakdown and pay only the official recipient.

Common problems include inconsistent names, incomplete attestation, housing evidence, short passport validity, the wrong authority and missed correction requests. No intermediary can guarantee approval; ask ICP or GDRFA about a complex case before applying.

Checklist before submission

Confirm the authority, sponsor validity, income, housing, attested relationship evidence, matching names and itemized fees. Do not send a complete family file to an unknown agent and never disclose an OTP.
