How to renew Emirates ID and UAE residence
A practical plan covering timing, passport validity, medical fitness, the linked application, biometrics, delivery and data safety.

For a resident, Emirates ID renewal is normally linked to residence-permit renewal. Check the passport and expiry date, then confirm who submits the application. Emirates served by ICP use a unified residence-and-ID form; Dubai residents use the matching GDRFA/Amer service.
When should you begin?
ICP allows residents to renew an ID after expiry or during the final six months of validity. Do not wait until the last day: an employer or family sponsor may need to complete a linked step first.
The ICP service card states that a passport needs at least three months of validity for ID renewal. A residence category may require more, so open the current card for the exact service.
Who submits, and what should you prepare?
An employer often starts the process for an employee; a family sponsor does so for a dependant. Self-sponsored, investor, Green and Golden categories use their own routes. Ask for the application reference and itemized fees.
- A valid passport, current residence details and Emirates ID.
- A new photograph meeting ICP specifications.
- Employment, sponsorship, study or other category evidence.
- Medical fitness and insurance where required.
- A current mobile number, address and delivery method.
What are the ICP steps?
Use the official site or app, select the correct category, review retrieved data, upload missing evidence, pay the displayed fees and keep the receipt. Complete medical fitness, biometrics or a signature if instructed.
People aged 15 or above may be asked for fingerprints and a signature. Do not ignore a correction request: an incomplete procedure can cause cancellation.
What is different in Dubai?
ICP notes that the unified residence-and-ID form applies in every emirate except Dubai. In Dubai, select the GDRFA route for your category—private sector, family, investor or student. Do not reuse another applicant's checklist.
What should you check after issuance?
Verify the name, birth date, nationality, passport number and validity. Receive the card only through the stated official channel. Update a bank or employer only where required, and do not share a complete ID copy unnecessarily.
